Devoted Conference

2010 is kicking off an annual conference called ‘Devoted Conference which aims to focus on the lives and contribution of Puritan Christians.

A puritan is someone who is deathly afraid that someone, somewhere, is having fun’

The Puritans are often maligned and misunderstood, but what is seldom understood is that they have much to offer us as the gospel engages our hearts and applies its truth to every aspect of our lives. Each year the conference seeks to focus on two Puritans, highlighting their personal lives as well as the significant contributions they have made to Christian theology and life. Devoted Conference is for any Christian who wants to know about the lives of some extraordinary Christian men and women.

In 2010, Devoted Conference will be focusing on two of the greats – John Owen and Richard Baxter. Alongside looking at the lives of these men, we will be seeing how Owen’s view of Christ and Baxter’s view on pastoral ministry impacts on Christians today.

REASONS TO COME

1) The Subjects : John Owen & Richard Baxter

We’re tackling two of the biggest puritan names- their big for good reason. Owen is the most significant theologian of the 17th Century and Baxter is one of the most respected pastors of all time.

2) The Speakers : Marty Foord & Keith Condie

Marty and Keith represent two of Australia’s leading Puritan scholars, but more than that, they are men who whose heart and soul have been encouraged as they have studied the vibrant, Christ honouring, spirituality of these men. They have done the hard work of scholarly research, but are great in communicating what they have learnt in a succinct and engaging manner.

3) The Format : Integrated & Diverse

The conference won’t be about dry academic lectures, but will include a mix of : Visual biographies of both men to located them in their historical context, Presentations by Marty & Keith robustly engaging with their writings, A Q&A panel discussion where will compare and contrast Baxter and Owen. As well as two short book reviews on the Glory of Christ and the Reformed Pastor.

4) The Encouragement : Heart & Life

These men knew how to do life well, because for them their theology was a part of their everyday life. They were men who spoke the big truths of God into small places of life. And they did it with passion conviction

5) The benefit : In preaching

They say: ‘behind every great man is a great woman’, but we reckon ‘behind every great preacher is great Puritan’. That’s certainty true for men like JI Packer, DM Lloyd Jones and John Piper who have been deeply impacted by their study of the Puritans.
